On water vapor transport in field soils

چکیده
Measurements of soil volumetric moisture content and temperature were made at 2, 4, 7, 10, and 15 cm below the surface of a bare field soil, over a 1-week period at 20-min intervals. The conductive heat and liquid moisture fluxes were calculated for the soil layer 7–10 cm below the surface, and the water vapor flux was then determined from both the energy transfer and mass transfer equations. Water vapor flux in this layer transported a significant amount of the total energy flux (up to 50%) and an appreciable amount of the total moisture flux (up to 25%). There was reasonable agreement between the water vapor flux calculated by the mass transfer equation and the vapor flux calculated by the energy equation.

The transport process of chemical-fertilizers, radioactive materials and other solutes in soils and porous media is important to understand the environmental and economic effects of industrial, agricultural and urban waste disposal methods. In unsaturated porous media, large gradient in aqueous osmotic potential derives significant water vapor fluxes towards regions of high solute concentration...
متن کاملReview of heat and water movement in ®eld soils
Coupled heat and water transport in soils has enjoyed extensive focus in soil physics and hydrology and yet, until recently, there has never been a satisfactory comparison of water vapor ̄uxes measured in the ®eld with theory. At least two factors have led to this, ®rst, most of the experimental work has been laboratory oriented with steady state boundary conditions imposed and second, there ha...
متن کاملWater vapor transport in soils from a pervaporative
4 A novel method for irrigation with saline water uses a polymer membrane, formed 5 into a tube, to treat and distribute the water simultaneously. The flux of water across 6 the membrane occurs by the process of pervaporation, during which a phase change from 7 liquid to vapor occurs. Thus water arrives in the soil in vapor phase. The experimental 8 results presented in this paper demonstrate t...
متن کاملNumerical Analysis of Coupled Water, Vapor, and Heat Transport in the Vadose Zone
Vapor movement is often an important part in the total water flux in the vadose zone of arid or semiarid regions because the soil moisture is relatively low. The twomajor objectives of this study were to develop a numerical model in the HYDRUS-1D code that (i) solves the coupled equations governing liquid water, water vapor, and heat transport, together with the surface water and energy balance...
متن کاملCritical Review Contaminant Vapor Adsorption at the Gas-Water Interface in Soils
There is evidence to suggest that the gas-water interface serves as an important retention domain for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in vadose-zone soil. Moreover, vapor adsorption at the gas-water interface may represent the dominant retention mechanism under certain conditions. In general, vapor-phase interfacial adsorption is most significant for low organic matter soils at intermediate w...
